Hiya! So today’s blog is kinda about a devastating topic. So I am sure most of you if not all of you have heard of the devastating, raging war between Russia and Ukraine. Now in this blog, I am gonna tell you about this war and a few other related things.
For starters, let us understand why Russia attacked Ukraine in the first place. While there had been tensions between Russia and Ukraine, a former Soviet republic, for a long time, the situation began getting out of control in early 2021. In January last year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged US President Joe Biden to let Ukraine join NATO. The reason Russia is against NATO is that On 1 April 2014, NATO unanimously decided to suspend all practical cooperation with the Russian Federation, in response to the Annexation of Crimea, but the NATO-Russia Council (NRC) was not suspended. This means that NATO won’t work with Russia. Russia recently took over a nuclear plant in Ukraine called Chernobyl. Now, this is bad because if this plant even gets touched by any of the weapons Russia has, then Ukraine and Russia will be in great trouble not to mention several other European countries that will be affected. Ok so now, this war devastating. It is pathetic! I mean wars, in general, are no good but this war is just some next-level stupidity right there. This war is not only taking the lives of thousands upon thousands but also separating families. There are thousands of kids not sure if they can see their fathers again. All the males between the age of 18-60 are not allowed to evacuate Ukraine but have to stay back and fight! I will leave the links to a few YouTube videos, you guys should seriously go watch ‘em. Also, you guys should do whatever you can to stop the war. We all can and we all will! Another important thing is that we should not forget this, many times people do things when they are in trend and later just forget about it! Let’s not forget about this! Heya! So here’s a question- Don’t you love beaches? Like all the water, sand, fun and sun. Well, the last bit, sun, do you know the reason you enjoy the warm rays of the sun? It is the Ozone Layer! It stops you from just sizzling up like a brownie in the sun’s rays. The reason I am talking about the Ozone layer cus there is a huge problem!
But first, we need to understand what is the Ozone layer and why is it important. So, for starters, the Ozone layer is this nice, kind little sheet that sits in the Stratosphere and has agreed to protect us. What I mean is that the sun sends out super harmful and scorching hot rays called ultraviolet rays and without the Ozone layer bocking the harmful rays and letting the good rays in, we would be toast, literally! It acts like a personal bodyguard for our planet. Time to understand what is the problem? In the 1970s, scientists discovered that the Ozone layer was being depleted. Temperature, weather, latitude and altitude and substances ejected by natural events such as volcanic eruptions can affect ozone levels. However, these natural phenomena could not explain the levels of depletion observed and scientific evidence revealed that certain man-made chemicals were the cause. Ozone depletion is greatest at the South Pole. It occurs mainly in late winter and early spring (August-November) and peak depletion usually occur in early October, when ozone is often destroyed in large areas. There is a huge hole mostly in the Antarctic region. It is one of the major causes of Global Warming since the “Ozone Hole” allows harmful ultraviolet rays in through its hole. Now, this is a big problem cus it can make Global Warming worse and practically make the planet like Venus, not suitable for life. Its causes are primarily the pollution we as humans make, the smoke emitted from our vehicles, industries and more. The only way I can think of to reduce the size of the hole is to reduce pollution. I am back! So before I start, there is a surprise at the end! Wait! Don’t scroll down, no cheating. Only read the surprise after you finish reading the entire blog!
So, I am sure at least one person in your family uses silk, right? Like a saree, purse or anything. But do you know how silk is made? It is the cruellest fabric ever made! Many of you may even know how it is made but for those of you who don’t know how it is made, here it is- Silk producers treat the cocoon with hot air, steam, or boil it in water, in a process called “stifling.” But when you boil the cocoon in water or bake it with hot air, you’re killing the pupa inside. And mass amounts of pupas are killed in these ways to make the world’s silk. To make one pound of the lustrous, revered material requires about 2,500 or more silkworms. So here’s how people make silk, it is super cruel. And it is also a reminder to us how cruel humans can get just for the sake of money and fashion. Just to make a small buck or look super stylish, modern and stunning or just to experience the premium quality, mankind can get so cruel, even to the point of cruelly taking the life of an innocent being. Next time you try to go for fashion, think beyond it and about the cruelty that goes into making it. Thanks for giving me time and reading this blog post. Be Safe and Have a Good One and I am out! Sources- https://qz.com/quartzy/1309227/asos-is-banning-silk-but-is-it-really-unethical-to-wear/ Don't worry, I didn't forget. So the surprise is that in the first week of May I will be posting blogs every single day! This is what I would like to call the "Rapid Fire Week!" So mark your calendars for this wonderful week! Sup? I am back, and I was thinking that I am an idiot. Well, I talk about soo many environmental issues, but hold up! How in the world do we solve ‘em? Well considering it’s the Gen Z taking charge, here are some Gen Z options-
1) Solar Glass- What if every window in a skyscraper could generate energy? That's the promise of solar glass, an emerging technology that's getting a lot of buzz in design and sustainability circles. Just like it sounds, solar glass is suitably transparent window material but also captures the sun's energy and converts it into electricity. 2) Plant-Based Plastic!- Ok, this is straight-up gold for me! I have been talking about a substitute for plastic for ages, and here it is. We have to put an end to single-use plastics. In many places, straws are only given out upon request and single-use plastic bags have disappeared from grocery stores. Plant-based plastics that biodegrade are one palatable solution, as they could, in theory, replace many of the plastic products already in circulation. An Indonesian company called Avani Eco has been making bio-plastic out of cassava since 2014. Like fake meat and solar glass, this should become a booming sector in the years ahead. But beware: Not all bioplastics biodegrade, and the merit of some production techniques is debated. Part of becoming a responsible consumer in the next decade will be knowing the life cycle of the products we choose to buy, from creation to entropy. 3) Carbon Tiles- In India, there is a man who makes tiles out of carbon dioxide! He collects the pollution in the air somehow and converts it into tiles, one tile is equal to 1 day of fresh clean air! Let’s support this initiative! These are just a few of the inventions, but there are so many more that we have to explore, if you would like a part 2 where I talk about more amazing tech, comment so.
